The Grammy Awards has included a new category for African music named ‘Best African Music Performance’ added of its upcoming 2024 show.
The announcement was made known on Tuesday afternoon (June 13, 2023) via Twitter that the Grammy Awards has set aside a category for mainly African music called ‘Best African Music Performance’ and it will take effect from 2024 show.
According to the Grammys’ statement, the new category is a track and singles category that recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent.
The category is said to include but not limited to Afrobeat, Afro-Fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.
